Many questions have been asked about how 4G can help reduce environmental impacts and benefit individuals and organizations well being. In pursuit of answers, we have found many exciting areas of enormous leverage and satisfaction. When we first started, many of these were speculative because a number of enabling factors first had to come to fruition. Now we find competitive involvement from many interested directions that comprise win-win scenrios that highly leveraged. While we can't talk about many of these, e can say that enable services and adoption trends that help society reduce it's addiction to fossil fuel consumption. very effective business and social programs are shaping up. The Q&A section contemplates a few ideas Q1: What makes 4G unique as a focus for Green initiatives? A1: The evolution of 4G to a convergent platform provides the needed bandwidth, wide area coverage and low cost that makes 'personal broadband everywhere' more practical. This comes at a time when society is looking for ways to reduce dependency on oil and other means of polution and dependency while also providing economic benefits. The ability to use multiple spectrum from a few hundred kHz to several GHz, including both licensed and unlicensed spectrum shifts the wireless environment from a predominantly service provider prescribed network to also being a user deployed and participatory network. The growth of open development platforms enabled by 3.5G-4G data networks, helps fuel the new applications that can now be harnessed to reduce environmental impacts. Q2: What can government do to help increase the rate of telecommuting, make more services available or facilitated via broadband such that it helps reduce environmental impacts? A2: Government plays a very critical role in providing training and educational resources, government sponsored projects, tax incentives, and endorsement of Green4G. Q3: What should government leaders keep in mind when determining legislation, policies and practices? A3: Government leaders should keep in mind that the first and perhaps best way to reduce the concerns over greenhouse emissions from automobiles, traffic congestion, and road construction is to promote and adopt technologies and methods that citizens find attractive to use. There is no magic bullet to turn back the trend in GW, but there are already clear results in harmonious developments:
Q4: Are there new or existing companies that are developing Green 4G applications? A4: Yes. The pace of development of new programs that work within Android, Symbian and other 3G and NG SDEs is enthusiastically developing. This is particularly the case over the past six months: the nature of developments looks comparable to the most enthusiastic areas of web and wireless growth. Q5: Describe a typical Green 4G enterprise. A5: There are many examples from orchestrating energy offsets for measured results for adoption of telecommuting and virtual presence and conferencing, to many levels of social networking, dynamic ridesharing, private and public transport collaborations, and tie-ins to global and local enterprise. The more exciting examples have similar prospects to existing web service and retail sales business models. And a few combine dynamics of viral networking with the ease of monetization of pre-authorized online payment systems. GPS and mapping is a core capability that is seeing much higher level development. What makes this more powerful are the connections to how people and organizations operate… effecting positively how they travel, collaborate, buy and sell, and keep tract and inform their professional and personal livelihoods. Every fair business must provide tangible results. Green 4G businesses provide both positive results for those who implement, use, and provide services and low impact and offsetting products. For example, at another end of spectrum, some methods of power or co-generation can help increase overall power generation efficiency and demand tailoring that has considerable impact on the environment. In many cases this goes well beyond expected energy goals and mandates to renewable sources including solar and energy-cycle synergistic combinations such as solar combined with fuel cell for dark-hours regeneration. Wireless also contributes to the ability to monitor and, in some cases help control how power is generated from primary plant, distributed and controlled. Rather than go deeper into this topic, we encourage involvement on panels, work groups, and consulting assignments that are arranged within Green 4G. |

Green4G - Now is the right time for the wireless industry to lead the information age society as the most effective and productive way to progress while reducing environmental impact. Next generation Wireless is the most dynamic 'technology environment' to bring people and information together.. the 4G super highway of the post fosil fuel age. Stand up to the challenge and exciting opportunities.
Green 4G advocates pro-active use of broadband as an enabler of Green communications methods used in work and personal activities. Join us to take advantage of industry promotion, legislative agenda and exchange of information.
i. Solar power
ii. Fuel-cells
iii. Co-generation
Use of wireless for power monitoring, distribution and
load-shedding
i. Greater use of telecommuting
ii. Video and on-site teleconferencing
iii. Paperless office
iv. Higher use of ridesharing and car pooling
v. More efficient use of transportation via data rich GPS-mapping
This outline only scratches the surface of individual developments and combinations of efforts that are within the embrace of the concept of using next generation wireless as the ‘information super highway’. These benefit from the combination of always-on connectivity, reasonable cost rich media and data services, and creative programs and SaaS and location aware and social networking capabilities.
